Empire State Building to use 100% renewable power

New York’s Empire State Building has become the city’s largest commercial purchaser of 100% renewable energy, after agreeing a supply deal with Green Mountain Energy Company.

Green Mountain has secured a two-year contract in a bidding process facilitated by MCEnergy, Inc., the Empire State Building’s energy consulting firm.

The 2.85 million square-foot office building is expected to require about 55 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy each year, which will avoid nearly 100 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year compared to fossil fuel power.
